Ogólnie można podzielić preampy na dwa rodzaje. 1. Transparentne czyli takie które nie wpływają na sygnał, przekazują go jak najwierniej. 2. Wzmacniacze wpływające na sygnał- nadają im unikalny charakter, brzmienie. Preampy znajdują się w każdym interfejsie/mikserze z tym że nie mogą się równać z dedykowanym preampem.
