W latach 30 XX wieku gitarzyści i producenci próbowali zwiększyć głośność gitary, która z trudem konkurowała z innymi instrumentami w dużych orkiestrach i zespołach jazzowych. Doprowadziło to do powstania gitar posiadających pudło rezonansowe, wyposażonych w przetworniki elektromagnetyczne.
