Ideal Partner for Low Output Microphones in the Studio and on Stage

Warm Lifter is a linear, active microphone preamp designed to provide powerful amplification for dynamic and ribbon microphones with low output levels. It features advanced functions for both live and studio use. The sweet tones of classic low-output microphones, heard on countless studio and live recordings, benefit from the sufficient power provided by high-quality high-gain preamps, bringing out the full frequency spectrum and tonal characteristics of the microphone. Warm Lifter offers a high-impedance microphone preamp with clean analog gain, tone filtering, and a balanced JFET input, all in a compact size and affordable price.

Perfect Sound Amplification

When working in the studio with a low-power interface or on stage with very long cables, there may be insufficient microphone gain. Warm Lifter provides 26 dB of analog gain with true impedance matching, ensuring that any low-output microphone you connect receives the professional power needed to connect to audio interfaces or mixers. Adding Warm Lifter gives you the extra headroom necessary to bring out the rich detail in the lower midrange, characteristic of passive ribbon microphones and many dynamic microphones, without adding digital artifacts or losing tone due to long cables. In addition to gain, Warm Lifter features a high-pass filter at 100 Hz and a 3 kHz shelf boost for shaping sound.

26 dB of Pure Analog Gain

Warm Lifter's signal path starts with a balanced JFET input with an impedance of 2.4 kΩ, delivering 26 dB of pure, analog gain. Having 26 dB of gain before reaching the digital level is extremely beneficial as it avoids the need to significantly increase the digital gain of the mixer or interface, which could lead to artifacts and sound degradation. The JFET input provides enough analog tone to make the microphone sound "open" without adding noise or excessive coloration. The 2.4 kΩ impedance provides excellent frequency response for low-output microphones within typical impedance ranges.

Filtering Critical Frequencies

Warm Lifter features a selectable 12 dB high-pass filter and a 2.5 dB shelf boost. The 12 dB high-pass filter has a cutoff frequency of 100 Hz, located in the middle of the true bass frequency range. Turning on the filter cuts all frequencies below 100 Hz, removing the "rumble" from the sound. The 2.5 dB shelf boost has a cutoff frequency of 3 kHz, located in the middle of the upper midrange frequency range. As a shelf boost, it means all frequencies above 3 kHz will be gently boosted by 2.5 dB compared to the high-pass filter. Because it is a shelf boost, it will boost everything above 3 kHz, adding higher mids, presence, and true highs known as "air" or "sparkle." Engaging this boost instantly adds clarity to your sound.

Warm Audio WA-WL Warm Lifter - microphone preamp - Frequently asked questions.

What is the Warm Lifter and what is it used for?

The Warm Lifter is a linear, active microphone preamp designed to provide strong amplification for low-output dynamic and ribbon microphones. It is ideal for live and studio use, enhancing the sound quality of low-output microphones.

What are the main features of the Warm Lifter?

The Warm Lifter offers 26 dB of pure analog gain, a high-impedance balanced JFET input, selectable 100 Hz high-pass filter, and 3 kHz shelving boost. It features ultra-low noise JFET input and balanced signal path.

Why should you use the Warm Lifter with low-output microphones?

The Warm Lifter provides the extra gain needed to bring out the full frequency spectrum and sound characteristics of the microphone without adding digital artifacts or losing tone due to long cables. This makes dynamic and ribbon microphones sound better and more expressive.

What are the benefits of tone filtering in the Warm Lifter?

The Warm Lifter features a selectable 100 Hz high-pass filter that removes rumble from the sound and a 3 kHz shelving boost that adds clarity and brightness. These filters allow for better sound customization to suit the user's needs.

What are the technical specifications of the Warm Lifter?

The Warm Lifter has an input impedance of 2.4k Ohm and an output impedance of 150 Ohm, a maximum input level of -6 dBu (388 mV RMS) and a maximum output level of 20 dBu (7.75 V RMS). The THD+N ratio at 1 kHz @ 14 dBu is <-107 dB (0.00047%), and the output noise is 7.75 µV (A-weighted) with a 150 Ohm input.

What is the purpose of phantom power in the Warm Lifter?

The Warm Lifter requires 48V phantom power, which draws 4.7 mA of current. Phantom power is necessary for the preamp to operate and provides stable, full power to the microphones.
