PURE DRIVE OCTO utilizes the famous SuperAnalogue PureDrive™ microphone preamp technology, originally introduced in the Solid State Logic ORIGIN console. PURE DRIVE OCTO introduces a new DRIVE mode and USB connectivity, creating an 8-channel rack unit in a 2U height form factor.
A modern classic, the SSL ORIGIN recording console, ushered in the era of PureDrive™ microphone preamp. This innovative preamp retains the clarity and punch of previous SSL designs while offering additional versatility by allowing users to change its character to warmer, harmonically rich, and saturated sound that evolves with the gain. ORIGIN, along with the PureDrive™ microphone preamp, has made its mark in the world's finest studios. Whether capturing delicate nuances of a piano concert in PURE mode or adding warmth to drum recordings in DRIVE mode, the PureDrive™ microphone preamp has become an essential tool in the most prestigious studios and recording facilities, thanks to its flexibility and excellent sonic signature.
PURE DRIVE OCTO continues ORIGIN's legacy in a rack-mounted unit, offering eight microphone preamps with renowned PURE and DRIVE modes from the ORIGIN console. Additionally, it goes a step further by adding a new "asymmetric" DRIVE, advanced digital connectivity, and a built-in USB interface. PURE DRIVE OCTO offers four input impedance options for the microphone preamp, allowing sound engineers to explore different tonal possibilities or match the preamp impedance to the microphone. Furthermore, each microphone preamp features independent +48V phantom power, polarity inversion, and high-pass filter. PURE DRIVE OCTO appears to be one of the most efficient and feature-rich external microphone preamps available in the market, introducing numerous new audio and connectivity options for more demanding producers and recording engineers.
Three drive modes - One microphone preamp
PURE DRIVE OCTO is the result of SSL's commitment to progressive analog circuit design. No electromechanical components (potentiometers, mechanical switches, relays, etc.) are used in the critical audio signal path of PURE DRIVE OCTO, increasing the product's durability and allowing seamless "matching" of all channels - not just stereo pairs. The use of digitally controlled analog circuits, controlled by potentiometers and electronic switches, simplifies recall and ensures precision in settings.
Each of the PURE DRIVE OCTO microphone preamps can be independently switched between three different DRIVE modes: Clean, Classic Drive, and Asymmetric Drive.
Clean mode is a highly regarded linear SSL preamp with very low inherent noise levels. It is known for its ability to faithfully capture the sound source with exceptional clarity and detail.
Classic Drive is a symmetrical mode that mainly generates odd harmonics; the same sound that characterizes the ORIGIN console.
Asymmetric Drive offers a new sound coloring option, designed specifically for the PURE DRIVE series, making even harmonics dominant and providing distinct rounding of sound, distinctive tonal coloration, and softening of transients.
Advanced connectivity options
PURE DRIVE OCTO opens up a world of recording possibilities. Its versatile selection of analog and digital inputs/outputs makes it exceptionally high-performing and flexible microphone preamps. Whether you are recording a world-class band in a studio or adding character to tracks during production, PURE DRIVE OCTO is perfect. With the integrated USB sound card, PURE DRIVE QUAD is also ideal for project studios and on-location sessions where quality is paramount.
PURE DRIVE OCTO features four rear-mounted combo XLR inputs, four front panel HI-Z/DI instrument inputs with automatic input detection, and three sets of D-sub connectors for line inputs, as well as insert send and insert return. The insert return/ADC inputs of PURE DRIVE QUAD operate at full line level +24 dBu, allowing seamless integration with other professional equipment.
The versatile digital connectivity of PURE DRIVE OCTO includes an integrated USB sound card transporting eight audio channels to a DAW at up to 32-bit resolution and a sampling rate of up to 192 kHz. Four pairs of AES/EBU outputs and one ADAT output transmit eight channels at 24-bit resolution and 48 kHz or up to four channels at 24-bit/192 kHz via SMUX. AES and ADAT outputs can be individually used as DAW program outputs. Additionally, there is a word clock input and output with automatic clock adjustment, ensuring reliable digital clocking.
