"Banjolele" goes back to 1917, when Alvin D. Keech called the combination of a traditional ukulele and banjo "banjulele-banjo". It was most popular in the years 1920-1930. The instrument has the scale and tuning of a traditional ukulele, the structure and sound of a typical mandolin.
