Marka Kramer powstała pod koniec lat 70., zdobywając popularność dzięki innowacyjnym gitarom z aluminiowymi gryfami i korpusami z egzotycznych gatunków drewna. Na początku lat 80. firma przeszła na bardziej tradycyjne drewniane gryfy i rozszerzyła produkcję, co pozwoliło jej dotrzeć do szerszego grona muzyków. Kluczowym momentem było wprowadzenie tremola Floyd Rose, które dało Kramerowi przewagę na rynku i uczyniło markę symbolem brzmienia rocka lat 80. W połowie dekady Kramer był najlepiej sprzedającą się marką gitar w USA.

Pod koniec lat 80. firma zaczęła jednak zmagać się z problemami finansowymi i w 1991 roku ogłosiła bankructwo. W 1997 roku marka została przejęta przez Gibson, który przywrócił do produkcji kultowe modele i tchnął w nią nowe życie. Dzięki temu Kramer do dziś pozostaje ikoną gitarowej sceny rockowej.
