W latach 30 XX wieku gitarzyści i producenci próbowali zwiększyć głośność gitary, która z trudem konkurowała z innymi instrumentami w dużych orkiestrach i zespołach jazzowych. Doprowadziło to do powstania gitar posiadających pudło rezonansowe, wyposażonych w przetworniki elektromagnetyczne. Gitary tego typu posiadają otwory w pudle rezonansowym w kształcie litery „f” i najczęściej przetworniki typu humbucker. Modyfikacją gitary hollow-body jest semi-hollow charakteryzująca się blokiem litego drewna między przednią i tylną płytą instrumentu oraz cieńszym korpusem.
