W latach 30 XX wieku gitarzyści i producenci próbowali zwiększyć głośność gitary, która z trudem konkurowała z innymi instrumentami w dużych orkiestrach i zespołach jazzowych. Doprowadziło to do powstania gitar posiadających pudło rezonansowe, wyposażonych w przetworniki elektromagnetyczne. Gitary tego typu posiadają otwory w pudle rezonansowym w kształcie litery „f” i najczęściej przetworniki typu humbucker. Modyfikacją gitary hollow-body jest semi-hollow charakteryzująca się blokiem litego drewna między przednią i tylną płytą instrumentu oraz cieńszym korpusem. Konstrukcja tego typu gitar nadaje im inną charakterystykę brzmieniową niż konstrukcje solidbody. Dźwięk tych instrumentów jest ceniony za czyste i ciepłe brzmienie. Gitary hollow i semi-hollow wykorzystywane są przede wszystkim przez muzyków jazzowych i bluesowych, ale często znajdują zastosowanie w muzyce rockowej czy popowej. Znani użytkownicy to Joe Pass, Pat Metheny, BB King, Dave Grohl oraz wielu wielu innych.
