Zazwyczaj korpus gitar typu Les Paul zbudowany jest z mahoniu i posiada jedno wcięcie w jego dolnej części, które umożliwia grę w wysokich pozycjach. Cechą charakterystyczną konstrukcji jest wklejany gryf (tzw. set-in), skala 24-3/4" i 22 progi. Najczęściej Les Paul-e wyposażone są w stały mostek Tune-o-Matic, Stopbar i przetworniki humbucker. Gitary Les Paul świetnie sprawdzają się w stylach takich jak jazz, blues, reggae, rock i jego cięższe odmiany. Najbardziej znani użytkownicy to Slash, Jimmi Page, Zakk Wylde, Bob Marley, Les Paul.
