Superstrat to rodzaj gitary elektrycznej, która konstrukcyjnie przypomina Stratocastera, ale posiada cechy, które wyraźnie odróżniają ją od pierwowzoru. Najczęściej korpus Superstratów posiada głębsze wcięcia w korpusie i bardziej spiczaste rogi, które nadają gitarze bardziej agresywny, nowoczesny kształt. Układ elektryczny to przynajmniej jeden przetwornik humbucker, a najczęściej spotykane rozwiązania to HH, HSH, HSS. Większość superstratów wyposażona jest w obustronne mostki tremolo takie jak np. Floyd Rose. Gryf często posiada wysoki radius(dość płaska podstrunnica) i 24 progi. Instrumenty typu Superstrat najlepiej sprawdzają się w muzyce rockowej i metalowej. Wykorzystuje je bardzo wielu gitarzystów solowych choć te instrumenty świetnie nadają się też do gry podkładowej. Superstraty wykorzystywane są przez bardzo wielu muzyków choćby takich jak Edward Van Halen, Steve Vai, John Petrucci czy Joe Satriani.
