Został stworzony przez firmy Microsoft, Intel, Compaq, IBM i DEC. Aktualnie na rynku dostępne jest wiele różniących się od siebie rodzajów USB. Jedną z najnowszych wersji USB jest USB-C. Swoim wyglądem nie różni zbytnio się od wtyczki Thunderbolt 3.
