The Japanese tradition of playing historical taiko drums has been deeply rooted in the culture of this country since ancient times. Taiko drums - also known as "wadaiko" - are an integral part of traditional Japanese performing arts and rituals and are regularly used at local events and festivals. As a Japanese company, Roland has always had great respect for Taiko culture and contributes strongly to fostering tradition by helping to bring the devotion and artistry of traditional Japanese music to a wider audience.
Created and manufactured in Japan, the revolutionary TAIKO-1 electronic percussion instrument provides a classic taiko experience with many of the advantages of modern technology, making playing Japanese drums more enjoyable and accessible than ever before. Backed by decades of expertise in developing the finest products such as the V-Drums and the ELCajon EC-10, the TAIKO-1 brings the power and convenience of Roland's electronic percussion instruments to taiko enthusiasts around the world.
The most versatile Taiko drum ever
The physical design of the TAIKO-1 is based on the katsugi okedo daiko, a popular taiko drum worn in a sling over the shoulder. However, the modern digital sound engine goes well beyond the capabilities of any acoustic drum, allowing you to play a wide variety of taiko percussion sounds with a single instrument.
Explore the Variety of Japanese Percussion Instruments
Taiko drums come in many different sizes and shapes, and the TAIKO-1 puts them at your fingertips. On board you'll find an okedo daiko along with the familiar nagado daiko, a smaller shime taiko, and a huge odaiko that emits a powerful, thundering voice. Other sounds include variations of bachi (drumstick), chappa (a pair of small cymbals), hyoshigi (a pair of wooden blocks), and layered drum sounds, as well as the funny cheers and calls that are common in taiko performances.
Unlimited Dynamics and Expression
Thanks to the dual-zone trigger technology with positional detection, you can get a wide range of tones from a single drum. Middle strokes are strong and full, while off-center play provides longer tones. And when you want a clearer sound, just play close to the edge. The speed of the game is also perfectly reproduced, providing unlimited dynamic expression.
Practice Quiet at Home
The TAIKO-1 allows you to practice anytime and anywhere that is impossible with a traditional taiko drum. Specially designed mesh heads provide a familiar, natural feel while keeping the physical noise level very low - plug in headphones and enjoy powerful, dynamic taiko sounds, with the barely audible whispers of family members and neighbors. Ji-uchi patterns - often played as backing rhythms in taiko ensembles - are also available for both timing and accompaniment practice during performances.
Portable Convenience
TAIKO-1 weighs 4.5 kg, which is roughly the same as the average katsugi okedo daiko. However, unlike a traditional taiko instrument, the TAIKO-1 can be quickly disassembled for transport in a small vehicle or public transport. When it's time to perform or rehearse, just remove the eight middle bars connecting the two ends and off you go!
Play Your Own Tones
By importing your own WAV files from a USB stick, it is possible to customize the TAIKO-1 to suit your needs. Import your own taiko sound or use many third-party sounds. Or go on an adventure with non-taiko sounds and forge new paths with the expressive playability of the TAIKO-1. Imported sounds can be played alone or layered on internal instruments to create unique blended sounds.
Increased Mobility thanks to Battery Powered
Play for up to five hours on eight AA Ni-MH batteries without the need for an external power source. By connecting the TAIKO-1 audio output to a wireless system such as the BOSS WL series, you can roam the stage freely.
Stream Music via Bluetooth
Thanks to Bluetooth, you can easily bring your sessions to life by playing backing music and lessons. Stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the TAIKO-1, and then listen to it through headphones or a connected speaker. Play along with your favorite songs, learn new skills with tutorial videos, or practice with rehearsal tapes to prepare for the next taiko performance.
