‌KM 180 series

The 180 series consists of three compact miniature microphones with a choice of directional characteristics that meet the requirements that are set in most basic studio applications. Due to their optimized mechanical construction and conscious resignation from the modular construction, which is necessary in many cases, the "180 Series" is predestined for use in limited budget productions and home recording studios.

The circular model KM 183 and hypercardioid KM 185 were built on the basis of the KM 184 microphone with cardioid directivity characteristics, which in a very short time achieved great market success and became the standard for the entire studio community. All 180 Series microphones are available in matte black or nickel.

Usage
Their slim shapes and directivity characteristics presented below make the 180 series microphones exceptionally suitable for use in a very wide range of tasks carried out in the radio and television sector.

Acoustic properties
The KM 183 and KM 184 microphones are the successors of the proven KM 83 and KM 84 models, which have been used successfully around the world since the 1970s. Model KM 185 completes the offer of this series with a microphone with hypercardioid characteristics.

The KM 183 microphone is a pressure transmitter with a signal gain of approximately 7 dB in the vicinity of 10 kHz in a free field. In the diffuse field, it has a flat frequency response curve. Pressure transducers of KM 184 and KM 185 models are characterized by very even frequency characteristics determined not only in the 0 ° axis, but also in the case of lateral incidence of sound (outside the microphone axis). In a typical application, there is no coloring of the sound in a wide range of the sound pickup angle.

Although the KM 184 model has the same capsule as the KM 84, their frequency response slightly differs for the source at 0 °. The KM 184 has a delicate elevation of the graph around 9 kHz, similar to the characteristic curve, which was successfully introduced with the KM 140 model. As a result, a better tonal balance is obtained, it is more fresh and vivid compared to the KM 84, which has a flat frequency response in this band.
This difference was obtained only by slightly changing the holes in the back of the capsule and this is not due to resonances.

The KM 185 model with hypercardioid directivity characteristics is characterized by attenuation of signals reaching the side and back of the microphone by about 10 dB, with minimal sensitivity at the source of the signal at an angle of 120 °.

Electrical properties
The "180 Series" microphones have the same layout without the use of transformers, which was used in the KM 100 system, which ensures excellent technical parameters:

In comparison to the KM 84 model, the dynamic range of the KM 184 microphone is increased by 24 dB, mainly by limiting own noise to only 22 dB (CCIR) and increasing the range of acoustic pressure received up to 138 dB.

These microphones work without any problems, even if the input of cooperating devices is asymmetrical, as is the case, for example, in some DAT recorders.

The output of the 180 series models, as with all Neumann microphones, is symmetrical and the microphones are phantom powered (48V).

Economy
"180 Series" is a good choice for all users who are looking for a high quality miniature microphone, but at the same time do not need a complex, modular KM 100 system, which is still part of the Neumann offer.

The mechanical design of the microphones has been simplified. For example, the capsule and the output stage can not be separated from each other. For this reason, "Series 180" is an economical alternative for all users who want to have Neumann microphones, but not at the expense of lowering electroacoustic properties.
